The very spectacular Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his titular role as Sherlock Holmes in season 5. Martin Freeman will also return for his role of Dr. John Watson, Sherlock’s best friend. Earlier, the series creator Steven Moffat asserted that it is unlikely for the show to disappear entirely. Mark Gatiss, the other creator, repeated similar thing in another media conversation earlier.

What the cast think about Sherlock season 5?

Also, Benedict Cumberbatch denied all rumors surrounding his discontinuation including the making of Sherlock Season 5 earlier. “Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock,” he said. In a recent conversation with Collider, Martin Freeman said, “not only he, but Benedict Cumberbatch”. He added “Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are super busy and that’s the reason they do not want to run the risk of ruining the show’s legacy by producing a subpar season”. Indirectly, he had given a hint for the making of Season 5.

In the last season we were introduced to Sherlock’s sister Eurus Holmes (played by Sian Brooke). In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk Sian Brooke said she would love to come back to play Eurus. She said: “It would be great, she is definitely a character I would love to revisit. You don’t get to play these parts every day, she’s abnormal and those sorts of parts are always great. “She doesn’t respond or behave the way others do. I get asked questions about what would happen next to her. There is definitely more to the mind of that character.”

What the creators said about a new season?

While celebrating the 10th anniversary of the series’ debut on the BBC, the creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat also talked about what could possibly happen next. Steven Moffat told Digital Spy: “I haven’t really thought about it. Mark [Gatiss, co-showrunner]’s been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.” Gatiss mentioned, “Mark’s always wanted to do the Red-Headed League”. One story that caught their eye is the Red-Headed League, Andrew Scott’s character, Jim Moriarty and the plot to rob a bank. The imminent season is likely to introduce a new villain, Dr Grimesby Roylott.

“Also it’s very tempting but the Speckled Band is completely useless to us on Sherlock somehow,” Gatiss stated. “There’s lots and lots (of stories) aren’t there still? Lots of amazing stories – bits of stories that are very appealing,” he added. Then Steven Moffat said, “We probably remain quiet on the ones that we’re really quite interested in.”

Back in January 14 2020 Moffat said a fifth series was planned but by the time the fouth series aired a final decision had not yet been made. Both Cumberbatch and Moffat have shown an interest in continuing the series in the future, but no plans were put in place. As Cumberbatch and Freeman has been extremely busy with other series, a final release date is still up in the air.
