Delhi Court sends Creator of Bulli Bai in seven-day police custody

On Thursday, a Delhi court sentenced the principal conspirator and author of ‘Bulli Bai’ on GitHub, as well as the app’s main Twitter account holder, to seven days in police detention.

What is the Bulli Bai ?

Bulli Bai is essentially a software programme that replicates an online auction. While the auctions are bogus, the term “bulli” is a disparaging term used in the area. Sulli Deals, a similar software, was also hosted on GitHub last year. Sulli, like the name Bulli, is an insult.

What is the Bulli Bai’s App controversy?

Hundreds of Muslim women’s images were uploaded without their knowledge for a virtual ‘auction’ via the ‘Bulli Bai’ software on open-source platform GitHub. In India, the app sparked widespread criticism.

One woman filed a complaint with the Cyber Police Station in southeast Delhi after hearing about the Bulli Bai app. She said that her photo had been shared on Twitter by users with the name @bullibai_ and others. As a result, a FIR was filed.

The accounts implicated in the case were suspended on Twitter, and the contentious software was removed from GitHub.

The Delhi Police received technological support for the probe.

Raw data analysis was carried out with the support of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), and it was discovered that the main suspect was based in Jorhat, Assam.

Several police stations around the country have received complaints of Muslim women being listed for “auction” on the ‘Bulli Bai’ mobile application, with images acquired without permission and doctored. It’s the second time in less than a year that this has happened. The app appeared to be a clone of ‘Sulli Deals’ which triggered a similar row last year.

Other Arrests: The Mumbai Police have detained three persons in connection with the crime. Shweta Singh, 18, Mayank Rawal, 21, and Vishal Kumar Jha, 21, are among those arrested.
