Lohri, which falls the night before Makar Sankranti, is a traditional winter folk festival in North India, as well as a popular harvest festival for farmers. It marks the end of the Winter Solstice and the beginning of longer days as the sun moves closer to the northern hemisphere.

Lohri signifies the end of the winters and the start of a new harvest season because the Earth is closest to the sun at this time. It is mostly observed by Sikh and Hindu groups in the Punjab area of India.

On the unique occasion of Lohri, people light a bonfire and gather around it to rejoice. On this day, Surya (the Sun god) is worshipped. The flames of the bonfire are said to carry the people’s prayers to the Sun God on this day, who will bless the ground with a successful harvest and bring an end to the cold and harsh winter days

Another important aspect of the Lohri celebration is that the sun enters the Rashi (zodiac) of Makara (Capricorn) on this day, which is considered auspicious since it represents a new beginning.

The storey of ‘Dulla Bhatti,’ a local hero of the Punjab region who, during the reign of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar, worked as a saviour of the people and was known as the ‘Robin Hood’ of Punjab because he would steal from the rich to provide for the poor, is said to have inspired the celebration of Lohri. He is best known for rescuing a group of young girls from slavery.

For soon-to-be parents and newlywed couples, the occasion is considered auspicious. People sing and dance to traditional folk music and worship Surya after lighting the campfire.
