On November 11, India commemorates Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s birth anniversary by celebrating National Education Day. He was the first Education Minister in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet, serving from 1947 to 1958. Schools typically mark the day with various functions and programmes. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the country’s first education minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him, calling his participation in the liberation movement inspiring.

“Tributes to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his Jayanti. A pathbreaking thinker and intellectual, his role in the freedom struggle is inspiring. He was passionate about the education sector and worked to further brotherhood in society,” tweeted PM Modi.

1. Date & History

Since 2008, November 11 has been designated as National Education Day.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was India’s first minister of education after independence. From August 15, 1947, to February 2, 1958, he served the country.

On September 11, 2008, the Ministry of Human Resources Development declared that they have decided to mark this great son of India’s birthday by remembering his contribution to the cause of education in India.

Since then, National Education Day has been observed without being declared a holiday from 2008 through November 11.

2. Significance

Every year, November 11 is commemorated in schools by holding a variety of entertaining and educational seminars, symposia, essay contests, rallies, and other activities.

Students and instructors gather to discuss the importance of literacy and the country’s commitment to education in general.

The purpose of National Education Day is to improve the quality of education provided to kids around the country.

On National Education Day 2021 we also a commemoration of Maulana Abul Azad’s significant contributions to Independent India’s educational system.
