Red Notice Review:  film with Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson, and Ryan Reynolds promises the world but delivers little

Red Notice Review: The most costly film ever to be streamed on Netflix, the action-adventure comedy is filthy and even diverting at times, but it never rises above its glitz and glam.

Cast: Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Rating: Two stars ( out of 5)

It’s surprising Gal Gadot doesn’t spontaneously break into a performance of Zara with so much double-crossing, strange teaming up, scheming, and backstabbing around every corner. At any time in Red Notice, Zara can touch me.

Because that’s exactly what it seems like: a Hollywoodized version of any Race film, done on a budget that dwarfs what the entire Bollywood industry is expected to generate this year.

Rawson Red Notice by Marshall Thurber is as ridiculous as they come. It’s a two-hour test of how far and how far back one can roll their eyes, based solely on the star power of Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne Johnson.

Red Notice is a heist-meets-a-cop-buddy-meets-history-flick that, in the end, looks like a’veg thali’ from your neighbourhood sweet shop. We consume it not because it is pleasing or appetising, but because it contains all of the food categories and the boxes are colourful and enticing. The lone sugar syrup-soaked gulab jamun in the thali is the only saving grace, which we drink down to wash down the awful spicy meal. Ryan Reynolds is that sugar-coated offering in Red Notice, with the best humorous lines and accompanying charm. He goes with the flow of the movie, not taking himself or the movie too seriously.

Gal Gadot harnesses her Wonder Woman avatar as she fights Dwayne Johnson and beats up the bad guys with such zeal that the word “psychopath” begins to hover over her like a speech cloud. There’s no denying that Dwayne Johnson is Dwayne Johnson. Actor Ritu Arya plays a desi Interpol Inspector Das, who is sent in to potentially check the ‘diversity box.’ The film contains a “supposed” unexpected surprise, but anyone with half a brain could see it coming a mile away.
