Mumbai Central Mall Fire: 3,500 People Evacuated Next Door

Some 3,500 people adjacent to a Mumbai Central Mall were evacuated after a fire broke out at the shopping complex, officials said today. The fire broke out late on Thursday night and efforts to douse the flames went on till this morning.

The fire had spread to the second and third floors of the mall.

Residents of the 55-storey building adjacent to the mall were taken to a nearby ground for their safety.

Two firefighters were injured while trying to control the blaze at City Centre Mall in Nagpada in central Mumbai, news agency ANI reported.

Two firemen were injured were injured during operations and were admitted to J J Hospital.

The fire, which erupted on the second floor, also spread to the third floor of the mall. As many as 24 fire engines and 16 jumbo water tankers were rushed to the spot.

Twenty-four fire trucks are at the site and some 250 firefighter including Mumbai’s Chief Fire Officer Shashikant Kale are working to extinguish the fire.

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar and other officials visited the site on Thursday night to check the situation.

BMC’S STATEMENTS ON FIRE

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward officials, the fire at Mumbai Central Mall broke out at a shop on the second floor. Due to the thick smoke that had engulfed the area, the firemen had to open the widows of the mall to gain access to the shop.

The incident also resulted in traffic disruptions as both sides of Belasis road were shut for vehicular movement.

Among the injured fire personnel, Shamrao Jalan Banjara was admitted to the hospital due to suffocation. His condition is now stable, a disaster management official said.

Ramesh Prabhakar Chaugule, on the other hand, sustained injuries on his right hand. Both the firemen have been treated and discharged from the hospital.
