NATSAMRAT

Natsamrat is a 2016 Indian Marathi-language drama film starring Nana Patekar in the leading role. The film depicts the tragic family life of a stage actor who has retired from acting but is unable to forget his fond memories of theatre and the stage. After retirement, Ganpat Belwalkar (played by Nana Patekar), a Shakespearean actor, divides his property amongst his two children. However, their ungratefulness leaves Ganpat and his wife homeless during their old age. It definitely has a legendary status.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali is a 2015 Marathi film based on a play by the same name. The film is a jugalbandi (duel) of melody, a story of arrogance versus innocence. It is a musical masterpiece that should not be missed. The Maharaj of the state of Vishrampur arranges a singing competition. It is announced that the winner will be awarded the status of a royal singer. Pandit Bhanu is then challenged by Khanasaheb Aftab. What follows this is both, fierce competition and worship of music, at the same time.

SAIRAT

A true blockbuster, Sairat was a superhit movie when it released. Sairat is a 2016 Indian Marathi-language romance film, directed by Nagraj Manjule. The movie follows the fortunes of young star-crossed lovers Parshya and Archie. When they fall in love, Archie’s father does everything to prevent his daughter from spending time with Parshya. It is because Parshyaa belongs to a lower-class family of fishermen. The two lovers decide to run away so they can be together but fate has its own plans. It is truly one of the best marathi movies of all time.

HARISHCHANDRACHI FACTORY

Harishchandrachi Factory is a 2009 Marathi film, directed by Paresh Mokashi. The movie depictis the struggle of Dadasaheb Phalke in making Raja Harishchandra in 1913. Raja Harishchandra was India’s first feature film and the birth of Indian cinema. Dadasaheb Phalke accidentally discovers a tent screening a silent movie. The idea of storytelling via motion pictures amazes him. He brings together a team of technicians to produce India’s first feature film. The film is not only educational and informative but also genuinely entertaining.

Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy is a Marathi film released in 2009. The film follows an underdog who fights against the evil in society, to re-instate his identity and keep his pride. Duniyadari is a 2013 Marathi film about love and life. It is about the journey of every one which eventually makes them realize the true face of life. Critical reception was positive. The plot follows the lives of a group of friends through their college life. They soon find out that one of them is suffering from terminal illness. Years later, they meet at their usual hang-out and remember the good times and their friends.

FANDRY

Another entry by Nagraj Manjule on this list. Fandry was actually his directorial debut. Set in contemporary times, the narrative tells the story of teenager Jabya and his family, who are Dalits. Jabya, who is a school-going boy, falls in love with Shalu, an upperclass girl. At the same time, his family seeks to hunt an elusive pig in order to earn a living. The movie focuses on the young boy’s infatuation amidst caste-based discrimination. The film—set in Akolner, a village near Ahmednagar—revolves around the issue of caste discrimination and narrates the story of the teenager from a Dalit family, who lives at the village fringe, and falls in love with an upper caste girl.
