Here’s Why Sidharth Malhotra’s Captain Vikram Batra Biopic Is Called Shershaah.

Captain Vikram Batra’s was nicknamed SherShaah. Days before his death, Captain Batra had spoken about the threat he got from a Pakistani soldier who intercepted his radio communication.

Shershaah, the biopic of Kargil hero Captain Vikram Batra, was published today on Amazon Prime Video. Captain Batra, played by Sidharth Malhotra, sacrificed his life in the service of the nation while recapturing Indian territory from Pakistani intruders during the Kargil War in 1999.

Captain Batra was given the nation’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his outstanding courage, steadfast resolve, leadership, and supreme sacrifice. But did you know why the biopic is named Shershaah?

After earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1995, Captain Vikram Batra began studying for the Combined Defense Services (CDS) test. In 1996, he passed the CDS exam and was commissioned as a lieutenant at the Indian Military Academy. In 1996, he was accepted into the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and commissioned into the Jessore Company of the Manekshaw Battalion and was commissioned into 13 JAK Rifles.

During the Kargil War in 1999, he was raised to the rank of Captain. Captain Vikram Batra’s Delta Company was ordered to reclaim one of the most difficult and critical peaks, peak 5140, on June 19 from the sub-sectors of Drass and Batalik.

He was nicknamed Sher Shah. Captain Batra along with his Delta Company decided to attack the enemy by surprise from the rear.

Captain Barta had told about a warning he received from a Pakistani soldier who intercepted his radio connection and stated, “Shershaah, you have come?” few days before his death. Don’t even bother to get up… And there was a moment when they challenged us, and my soldiers went crazy, saying, “How dare a Pakistani troop challenge us?”

Captain Batra and his troops planned to approach the hill from behind, at a height of 17,000 feet, to catch his opponents off guard. They ascended the rough hill, but as they neared the summit, Pakistani soldiers used machine gunfire to pin them to the cliff face.

As soon as they ascended the cliff and neared the top, Pakistani troops pinned them on the mouth of the cliff with machine-gun fire, but the brave Indian soldiers were undeterred by this and Captain Batra and five of his men climbed up.

Captain Vikram Batra alone killed three soldiers in close combat and despite being badly injured during the exchange; he regrouped his men and continued the mission.

Despite being seriously injured, he inspired his team to fulfil their mission. The point 5140 was captured at 3:30 am on June 20, 1999. He was given the nation’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his outstanding courage, steadfast resolve, leadership, and supreme sacrifice.
