Coronavirus: COVID 19 Vaccine Myths Busted

The supply of COVID 19 vaccination has begun in a number of countries. Although people were desperate to get a COVID vaccine to get back to everyday life, polls now show that many people around the world are apprehensive about having a COVID-19 vaccine. Few people have also been talking about new cases of allergic reactions suffered by people. This recent development has raised questions about the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. Here are some COVID 19 vaccine myths you need know to help you understand it or not, you should get vaccinated:

COVID 19 Vaccine Myths 1: The Vaccines were rushed

Vaccinations put together in the previous years have taken years to come to proper use. Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are based on the ‘plug-and-play’ mRNA technology that has been under production for decades. The technology has specifically been developed for a pandemic situation.

2: Vaccine is not safe for people with allergies

The vaccine has ingredients such as polyethylene alcohol. People who might be allergic to ingredients as such need not be given the vaccine shot for COVID 19. Notably, no allergic responses have been visible in Pfizer and Moderna’s clinical trials that involved 80,000 individuals.

Assistant Research Professor, Dr. Elissa Malkin, of Medicine at George Washington University and Co-Researcher of Moderna’s Vaccine Clinical Trial at GW told CNN, “Honestly, anaphylaxis and other serious allergic reactions are considered a potential risk with every licensed vaccine.”

She also mentioned, “It’s not surprising that as more people get vaccinated that allergic reactions would appear. We expect them to be uncommon and rare.”

3: A vaccine will affect your immunity adversely

Some people feel that while a vaccine can help eliminate one form of the disease, it can have a detrimental effect on the body’s total immunity. But that’s just a myth. The COVID 19 Vaccine only allows the body to create antibodies to a single pathogen, allowing the body to prevent the pathogen from invading and developing the disease in the future.

4: It Impacts people’s DNA

Pfizer and Moderna’s used mRNAs for the production of the COVID 19 vaccine that gave rise to the myth of it having an effect on one’s DNA. Former Head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Tom Frieden tweeted, “Think of it as an email sent to your immune system that shows what the virus looks like, instructions to kill it, and then—like a Snapchat message—it disappears. Amazing technology.”

5: COVID-19 vaccine may not be safe

While the vaccines have several side effects, COVID-19 causes extreme fever, cough, long-term lung injury, and even death. Regulators, such as the FDA, do not, however, allow the vaccine to come anywhere close to the population until it has been proved safe for use.

Brown University emergency room doctor Dr. Megan Ranney tweeted, “1% of all ppl who catch COVID-19 die. Another 10-20% are hospitalized. Another 30+% have long-lasting symptoms. The vaccine is far safer, with only minor temporary side effects.”
