Tokyo Olympic Day 1: Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in weightlifting.
Mirabai Chanu earned the silver medal and became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in the Women’s 49kg event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
“D.N.F.” The words “Did Not Finish” appeared beneath Mirabai Chanu’s name in the final scoreboard of the women’s 48kg weightlifting competition in Rio de Janeiro five years ago. Actually, it wasn’t quite that abrupt. Mirabai needed to dig deep and rally after finishing sixth in the final after completing her snatch task. One legitimate lift within her favoured range in the preferred clean and jerk section and she could have finished on the podium.
But that’s also when things started to go apart. Mirabai crashed out of the competition after failing to record a single lift in three attempts. Her lifts were found to be invalid in five of her six attempts.
Mirabai is likely to open India’s medal count in a somewhat revised women’s 49kg division, having entered the arena as a World No. 2 with a world record and a world championship gold in the interim.
Mirabai Chanu won India’s first Olympic medal, a silver medal in 49kg weightlifting with a total lift of 202 kg, at the Tokyo Olympics. Saurabh Chaudhary placed seventh in the final of the 10m air pistol. In the mixed team quarter-finals, Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav were defeated by Korea. B Sai Praneeth, a shuttler, is eliminated in the first round.
In the first round, India’s Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal were defeated by Chinese Taipei. India wins their first men’s hockey match of Group A thanks to a brace from Harmanpreet Singh. In the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification, Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela were unable to compete at their best. In addition, Saurabh Chaudhary placed seventh in the men’s 10m air pistol event.
