GANDHI AS A COMMUNICATOR

Mahatma Gandhi as a communicator was very successful.  His power to communicate with people was simply electrifying. These people were not freedom fighters, politicians, writers or thinkers. But these were the people who lived in villages and were illiterates.

Initially, Gandhi wasn’t aware of the condition of India. When he came to India from South Africa on a project, he was shocked to see the Real India. He decided to adapt the lifestyle of the people who were slum-dwellers, farmers, laborers, etc. Basically, he became a social reformer who wanted to spread the message of freedom.

‘Father of our Nation’ was a fearless mass communicator who was eloquent and expressive in his words. He wanted to vanish poverty and illiteracy. These were on the basis of caste, creed and language. His communication abilities was too good that people completely understand his message.

As a communicator, he tried to reach as many people as possible. His transformation from being a modern man wearing well-mannered and formal dresses to wearing dhoti, attracted people. People trusted him and understand that his message is based on truth. Gandhi’s message was to express not to impress.

GANDHI’S MOTTO

As a communicator, his motto was to spread the message of self-reliance among the masses. He wanted people to use swadeshi-products and shouldn’t be dependent on others for anything. Charkha was considered as a symbol of self-reliance.

GANDHI AS A JOURNALIST

As a Journalist, he started weekly newspaper named ‘Young India’. It gave the message of important issues like Satyagraha, non-violence, untouchability, spinning khadi and swadeshi. These were the important issues which needed to be solved at that time.

His aim of journalism was to serve service to the people rather than to run profit-making business. Also, he wanted to understand the popular feeling and give expression to it. Another is to arouse certain sentiments among the people and last is fearlessly to expose popular defects.

Moreover, India was a country of very low literacy rate. Gandhi’s wanted to convey the message of newspaper to all the part of population. So, he requested the literate people to read out loud the message written in the newspaper to all the people. In this way, illiterate will understand too.

MOVEMENTS LED BY MAHATMA GANDHI

Mahatma Gandhi was a patriot leader who led to many movements. These were Non-Violence Movement, Dandi March Movement, Quit India Movement and many more.

Gandhi used Non-violence movement to dismantle discrimination and inequality among the masses. Whereas, Quit India Movement demanded an end to British rule in India. Also, very popular Dandi march was done to protest against steep tax the British levied on salt.

In all these movements, Gandhi motivated others through the philosophy of non-violence. He communicated the message that issues can be solved with peace too, Violence is not a solution every time.

However, to confine Gandhi in India is to see his greatness as a national leader who was a great communicator and a journalist. He proliferated the ideas of self-reliance among the masses. Also, he helped to resolve issues of untouchability, caste discrimination, illiteracy and poverty.
