SSR’S Untimely Demise, Bollywood, and the Art of Propaganda
The untimely demise of Sushant Singh Rajput has reignited the debates on nepotism and biasness in the bollyowood industry. While a huge number of fans and followers of SSR are blaming bollywood’s camps for Sushant’s suicide, members from the film fraternity are also coming up with facts that reveal such privilege clubs do exist.
On 14th June afternoon, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence. The post mortem report states asphyxia due to hanging as the provisional cause of death. Mumbai police is investigating further to find out the reason behind such a mysterious death. Maharasthra MP Anil Deshmukh says, “police will also investigate this case from the angle of internal rivalries in bollywood.”
After Sushant’s sudden demise, netizens as well as some bollywood celebrities have started speaking about bollywood camps and nepotism. They are trying to figure out what could be the reason to trigger him to such an extent that he had to put an end this way. Was he still treated as an outsider in bollywood? And what was the reason behind it?
No doubt his death has raised all these questions and the netizens are outraged at the moment. Some are also boycotting their favorite stars on online petition. The seemingly grief-stricken posts from many celebs including SRK, Karan Johar, Alia Bhat, Sonam Kapoor and Salman Khan are being marked as hypocrisy and two-facedness.
A series of Tweets have slammed Karan Johar and Bhatt for being ruthlessly insensitive to this fellow actor. A clip from the chat show ‘Coffee with Karan’ has recently gone viral where Alia and Karan ridicule Sushant few years back. In another viral clip from a prestigious award ceremony, Shah Rukh Khan and his co-host Shahid Kapoor bully the newcomers like Sushant and Nil Nitin Mukesh.

While these videos show the height of bad humour quite normalized in bollywood scripts, Mahesh Bhatt is now trying to project Sushant as a mentally unstable person. He says he could see him as a Parveen Babi in the making and it troubled him so much that he advised Sushant’s then girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty to stay away from him. “There came a time when Sushant began hearing voices. Politician Sanjay Nirupam highlights the point that Sushant had signed seven films after the success of Chhichhore (2019) and lost all seven in a span of six months. As a consequence, he was suffering from isolation for over the last few months. Director Shekhar Kapoor tweets he wished if he could help during this phase.
The dispute doesn’t end here. Actor Kangana Ranaut shares a video where she says Sushant’s only fault was that he believed those who told him that he was ‘worthless’. Right after this, director Abhinav Kashyap makes a serious accusation that the lobby of YRF talent management agency (a wing of Yash Raj Films) may have played the role to push Sushant over to commit suicide. He shares his personal experience of being sabotaged by Salman Khan and his family since the release of his film Dabang.

On the contrary, actor Swara Bhaskar and Sushant’s friend Rohini Iyer urge people not to make propaganda of someone’s suffering and tragic demise. Bhaskar says, “part of India twitter blaming Karan and Alia for the tragic suicide of Sushant- for some silly game played on a frivolous and pointless chat show is both the height of idiocy and hypocricy.” She adds, “Sushant didn’t leave a note. We don’t know what he went through. We don’t know the cause. He didn’t want to talk about it. He’s gone. Let him have his peace and his family privacy.”

According to Rohini Iyer, Sushant never cared for parties, awards or cliques. “Firstly, he didn’t give a f*ck about fame or your opinions. He didn’t care about these people who are busy posting about not being in touch with him. For the record, he didn’t care about being in touch. He hated fake friends, phone calls and small talk. He rejected your parties, you didn’t shun him. He rejected your lobbies. So please don’t try to make sense of him or reduce his talent to serve your mere agenda.”

In the funeral ceremony of SSR, his co-stars Kriti Sanon, Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, actor Vivek Oberoi and filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor were spotted. While the investigation is still going on, the team of SSR launched a website on Tuesday named Self Musing, which will host the late Bollywood actor’s thoughts and wishes. Sushant was last seen in Netflix film Drive and his upcoming movie Dil Bechara is in its post-production stage.
