Facebook to Meta: The Metaverse’s contours go beyond just rebranding Facebook
CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented Meta at Connect 2021, a new business brand that unifies our apps and technologies. Meta’s mission will be to bring the metaverse to life by assisting people in connecting, forming communities, and expanding their enterprises.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook Inc. (now Meta), has been striving to make the term “metaverse” the next big thing in technology and communication. The business has already put aside billions of dollars to build the metaverse, which will incorporate Oculus VR headsets, AR glasses, and wristband technologies, as well as its virtual reality and augmented reality hardware products.
Project Cambria, rumoured to have next-generation hardware, is also slated to debut next year. It will not be a replacement for the Quest 2 headset, nor will it be the logical successor, the Quest 3; both will be released at some point in the future. When it comes out, this headset will have a better social presence, colour Passthrough, and pancake optics.
The Meta view
‘Meta,’ according to Idealake’s chief creative officer Rayomand J. Patell, fits in nicely with the company’s new orientation.
“Connecting people and ideas was one of the internet’s core concepts. From the earliest days of text-based bulletin boards to Star Wars, where we’ve seen holograms of people conversing in various ways… While that may be science fiction, Meta’s stated goal is to use technology to connect people,” Patell explains.
According to Patell, Meta will eventually represent “an aggregation of services and technology that generates a universe.”
Omkar Joshi, the founder and chief creative officer of hybrid>, a digital-first consulting firm, thinks that “future expansion plans” are more vital to the company than “putting their home in order.”
“Long term,” Joshi says, “this will prove to be a good strategy since, while the name Facebook may be targeted and reviled, Meta is no longer associated with that history.”
While jokes and memes have begun to circulate, Gaur believes that Facebook will thrive “because to hard work and massive capital, but not in developing a culture around the future of the Internet and all the promise it has for us.”
